Creating an online memorial site can be quite easy with the rise of social media and sites like Facebook. Facebook can freeze someone’s page at the request of family members after their death. Here is a link to the memorialisation request page.

At Fitting Farewell we always recommend that people consider a specialist website like www.muchloved.com or www.gonetosoon.org when creating an online memorial. These sites are specially designed to help you create a beautiful bespoke online memorial to a loved one.

I have personally used www.muchloved.com to create an online memorial to my mother. The site was simple to set up and I was able to add stories and photos of my Mum’s life easily. I was also able to upload some songs that meant so much to her and the family.

Family and friends were able to contribute their own memories and thoughts via the site. Whenever I am thinking about her or something she would have loved to have seen I can go on and light a candle for her. It is these little touches on an online memorial that elevate it beyond something that is achievable in a site like Facebook.

Both the memorial sites mentioned are free to use. You can have extra features at a small cost on www.muchloved.com. I can only speak about Much Loved as that is the one that I personally used.

There are other memorial sites available such as www.forevermissed.com, www.legacy.com/ns/, www.tributes.com, www.imorial.com, www.ilasting.com, www.virtual-memorials.com, www.last-memories.com and www.valleyoflife.com

For anyone interested here is a link the online memorial site that I created. [Visit site]

Creating an online tribute can be hard emotionally but it is also incredibly rewarding to see the comments and memories of friends and family posted. Often things that could have been forgotten and lost are shared with future generations.

My sister used a lot of the memories, stories and thoughts in her speech at the funeral. It was a great final tribute to a very special person.
